Bike Share Program

Overview

The Tech Bike Share program—available to students, faculty, and staff on the Long Island campus—was developed in response to student requests for bikes to be available on campus.

Branded New York Tech bikes are located at the Student Activity Center (SAC). Students, faculty, and staff may sign them out, preferably from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Fitness Center. Priority will be given to students.

Please note the following expectations:

  • Helmets are required but are not provided by New York Tech.
  • A completed, signed Pre-Use Checklist and Waiver are required to sign out the bike.
  • Orientation is required and performed by the Fitness Center staff.
  • Bikes must not be taken off campus.

Bike racks for New York Tech bikes and personal bikes are located throughout campus—and more locations will be developed in response to user requests:

  • Student Activity Center (sign in and store bikes here)
  • Academic Quad Bus Stop
  • Riland Bus Stop
  • NYIT de Seversky Mansion

The safety of our university community is paramount, and understanding rules and bike safety is an important part of the bike share orientation. As the bike program evolves, we expect to add bike lanes on campus.

Bike Share Procedures

Those who wish to use a bike should report to the Fitness Center at the SAC:

  • Student workers will perform an orientation and review the waiver. Signed waivers are required at first use and after any revision of bike-share procedures.
  • The user and student worker will go to the assigned bike rack and complete a pre-ride checklist. If there’s damage to the bike, it will be taken out of service.
  • Once a bike is unlocked, a pre-ride checklist will be completed by the user and student worker.
  • Bikes can only be used from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and must always be locked in a rack space provided on campus when not in use during this time.
  • When returning a bike to the Fitness Center, users must lock the bike on the rack corresponding to the bike number.
  • Keys must be returned to the Fitness Center by 6 p.m. If the fitness center is closed, keys can be placed in the dropbox outside the doors near the bathrooms.

User Orientation – Pre-Ride Bike Check:

  • Are your tires full of air? If they seem soft, select a different bike.
  • Check brakes.
  • Check wheels for damaged or broken spokes.
  • Adjust the seat for comfort.
  • Check that the tires are free of obstruction.
  • Scan the bike and bike components for obvious damages.
  • Always use your helmet and remember to lock your bike!
