New York City Campus Update

July 15, 2019

Is New York Institute of Technology’s Manhattan campus up for sale?

No decision has been made by New York Institute of Technology to sell its New York City campus, despite media coverage suggesting otherwise. However, as part of a strategic analysis of our operations, we are taking steps to better understand the costs of our leases and value of our properties. This is standard practice for any organization, especially in high-cost areas such as Manhattan.

In 2018, we retained a commercial real estate company, Newmark Knight Frank (NKF), to help us assess the value and best use of our properties in New York City. In the coming months, NKF will review potential bids to advise us on the best possible use of these assets in relation to our academic goals and strategies.

We are committed to informing the campus community of our progress.

I’m a current student at New York Tech's New York City campus. What happens if the campus is sold before I complete my degree?

If a sale were to happen, we would ensure that all students would be able to fully complete their New York Tech degrees. We will always have a plan that fully serves students’ needs.

While no decision has been made, all New York Tech students will be protected throughout any sale process and given opportunities to complete their accredited degree programs. Further, any sale would be a lengthy process; we would only undertake it as part of a considered approach to best to use our resources, specifically regarding which programs would continue at which campus locations. In addition, we would only sell a property if it’s worth selling and approved by our Board of Trustees.

Any affected student would be given alternative ways to complete his or her education. That might involve taking classes at a new NYC location, providing means to transportation to our Long Island campus, or using distance learning to connect classmates and professors virtually.
