Student Profile: Raynía Ashley Arnold

Making the Most of It

From the moment she attended Open House, Raynía Ashley Arnold knew that New York Institute of Technology was the right place for her. “I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Robert Koenig, Ed.D., chair of hospitality management studies, in the School of Management,” she says. “His motivational speech captivated me. After listening to his presentation, I knew hospitality was for me.”

Arnold comes from a family of educators, professors, supervisors, and entertainers, and growing up with such eclectic influences made her very interested in working hands-on with people. “I enjoy working in a melting pot of people, and I like the opportunity to network,” she says. “New York Tech gives me opportunities to develop professional aspects, including communication skills and leadership skills.”

She didn’t start her higher education at New York Tech, but since transferring she has made the most of her experience. She is the recipient of a New York Tech Transfer Scholarship, and she is the president of the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH). She is currently involved in The National Society of Leadership and Success, the international honor society Beta Gamma Sigma, and the Society of Hosteurs.

Last year, Arnold took on a big challenge as the event coordinator for a Christmas toy drive. She created and managed a committee, distributed surveys to potential attendees, coordinated with the Children’s Cancer & Blood Foundation, and secured sponsors and a venue. Taking place on both the Long Island and New York City campuses, the toy drive was very successful, and Arnold was able to present the children’s foundation with many toy and cash donations, including $1,000 from The Shops at Columbus Circle.

Without question, Arnold is a self-starter, and it is a quality that will likely serve her well in her future endeavors. Her dream is to manage and lead a team while exploring new areas in the hospitality industry and business. “New York Tech is an institution of outstanding achievement where students become experts in their chosen careers,” she says. “I knew this college would add to the leadership qualities that I aspire to have.”
