New York Tech Launches Python Programming Training for Women and Single Parents

March 5, 2021

New York Institute of Technology is launching a six-week training program that provides participants with in-demand coding skills in the popular Python programming language and dedicated career services and support. This training program is tailored to women, single parents, and caregivers impacted by the pandemic market downturn who are unemployed or underemployed.

Participants will complete the program ready to advance their careers. Python is an increasingly popular programming language favored by developers, data scientists, software engineers, and others for its versatility, flexibility, and object-oriented features. In fact, of the top 10 coding languages that employers are seeking in job postings in 2021, Python ranks first, according to Coding Dojo

“This training initiative underscores New York Tech’s commitment to workforce preparedness and development, to building the pipeline for those pursuing careers in STEM fields, and to supporting the university’s mission-driven goal of ensuring access to opportunity to all qualified individuals,” said Babak Beheshti, Ph.D., dean of NYIT College of Engineering and Computing Sciences.

The entirely virtual training, which begins on March 31, will include an introduction to simple data types, expressions and statements, program flow control structures, exception handling, and functions as well as elements of object-oriented programming.

Workshop Components
Designed and taught by expert faculty in New York Tech’s College of Engineering and Computing Sciences, some features of this six-week program include:

  • Two 1.5-hour remote classes per week (videotaped and made available for review).
  • Faculty extra help/office hours (one hour each week).
  • Instructor with expertise in programming and career discovery, supported by a network engineer.
  • Cohort team building (optional weekly offering matches participants in the training program to allow group discussion based on the past week’s topics covered.)
  • Dedicated career services including resume, interview, job search, and networking support as well as introductions to companies seeking skilled talent.
  • A Certificate of Completion awarded to participants completing this program.

New York Tech expects the training to be offered on an ongoing basis after the initial six-week session. Registration details are available online; the training fee of $495 ($295 for the first 30 registrants) is required to cover the costs for the instructors’ time.
