Tom Scerbo (B.Arch. ’98) Named Chair of FRIENDS of the School of Architecture and Design

August 30, 2022

Tom Scerbo (B.Arch. ’98), northeast division sales officer and senior vice president at HNTB Corporation, has been appointed chairperson of the executive committee for the FRIENDS of NYIT School of Architecture and Design. Scerbo succeeds founding chair Domenick Chieco (B.S.A.T. ’89), who was recently appointed to New York Tech’s Board of Trustees.

“It’s with great humility and enthusiasm that I accept this role and succeed my good friend Domenick Chieco, who, along with the other founding members of the FRIENDS group, have done so much to support New York Tech and the School of Architecture and Design,” said Scerbo. “As chair, my goal is to continue to create meaningful engagement between students, alumni, and the industry with a special focus on diversity and innovation as we educate and mentor the next generation of leaders poised to address the greatest challenges ahead of us.”

Scerbo, a 2018 recipient of the FRIENDS Spotlight on Alumni award, brings with him 23 years of experience and relationships in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. He has held numerous leadership positions and has led the design and delivery of major projects and programs in the New York metropolitan area and across the country. Prior to returning to HNTB in May 2022, he served eight years at AECOM, first as regional lead for the Buildings + Places business, followed by metro New York executive responsible for the performance and growth of all business lines.

School of Architecture and Design Dean Maria Perbellini recognized Chieco’s tenure and welcomed Scerbo in his new role.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank my friend Domenick again for his tireless guidance of the executive FRIENDS, for bringing our alumni together, and for being an incredible partner in promoting New York Tech among the entire architecture community,” said Perbellini. “His dedication to our students has been exemplary and inspirational to us. I know that Domenick will always be there for our school. When we started discussing a possible successor, we both didn’t have any hesitation about proposing Tom as the new chairman. He has a distinguished career path that exemplifies, at the highest level, how successful and accomplished our graduates can aspire to be. I am excited to continue to embrace the FRIENDS mission with Tom and the executive members, which is to inspire alumni to get involved in collaborative initiatives, mentorship, student support, and philanthropy.”

Scerbo’s professional career is augmented by support for the industry through his extensive involvement and leadership in organizations such as the New York Building Congress, the Society of American Military Engineers, Architecture, Construction, Engineering (ACE) Mentor Program of Greater NY, and the Van Alen Institute. He is a registered architect with a master’s degree in advanced architectural design from Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation.

The 14th Annual FRIENDS of NYIT School of Architecture and Design Reception will be held on Wednesday, October 26, at the IAC Building in New York City. Learn more about the event.
