Watch: Students Present Real-World Research at 14th Annual SOURCE

More than 160 undergraduate and graduate students presented their research and creative work at the 14th annual Symposium on University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE) at NYIT-Manhattan. “This is real-world research they’re doing, and this is a great showcase for it. It gets students in one discipline to see what others are doing,” said Daniel Quigley, Ph.D., associate dean of NYIT College of Arts and Sciences and one of the organizers of SOURCE.
The day began in an exhibition hall on the 11th floor of 16 W. 61st St. where attendees viewed poster presentations and asked students about their research. In the panel discussion that followed, Yuko Oda, M.F.A., associate professor of digital art and design, and Gavin McStay, Ph.D., assistant professor of life sciences, discussed the similarities in their work, despite having different areas of expertise. Both artists and scientists, they explained, can find inspiration in nature. As for process, they each start with an idea, study it further, and experiment with different methods to produce an outcome, whether it be a sculpture or a discovery about cells.
Breakout sessions throughout the day, on topics ranging from China’s firewall to surviving on Mars, gave students and attendees the opportunity to showcase and discuss research in greater depth. NYIT Interim President Rahmat Shoureshi, Ph.D., wrapped up the event by presenting certificates to the students, many of whom came from NYIT’s international campuses, including NYIT-Nanjing and NYIT-Vancouver.
