NYITCOM and Catholic Health Services Continue Partnership

Earlier this year, NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) entered into an agreement with Catholic Health Services (CHS) to further advance patient-centered, community-based healthcare on Long Island. Through this partnership, CHS will expand its number of seats for NYITCOM students to do medical rotations and pursue residencies and fellowships after they graduate.

This collaboration will extend the reach of CHS’ impact on the health of Long Island’s communities. “NYITCOM is proud to work with such a prestigious healthcare system to support CHS’ needs for new physicians as it continues to grow, as well as provide the best clinical partners and opportunities for students in NYITCOM and our School of Health Professions,” said Jerry Balentine, D.O., vice president for Medical Affairs and Global Health.

“[NYITCOM] produces nearly 300 graduates per year; approximately 50 percent enter primary care and look to practice on Long Island,” said Patrick M. O’Shaughnessy, D.O., M.B.A., FACEP, executive vice president and chief clinical officer, CHS. “CHS will offer NYITCOM students expanded clerkship opportunities at all of our six high-quality campuses.”

CHS has six hospitals, three skilled nursing facilities, and a home nursing service and hospice. It handles approximately 240,000 emergency department visits, 80,000 hospital admissions, and 400,000 outpatient visits yearly. “We are very excited about this expanded collaboration as NYIT’s medical school affords CHS some strong clinical growth opportunities for the next generation of future providers,” said O’Shaughnessy. “We welcome these quality graduates into our residencies and eventually into our growing physician practice enterprise.”
