NYIT Celebrates Veterans

On November 11, the nation will honor our military veterans. To help show appreciation for the members of our community who have served in the armed forces, NYIT recently held a special Veterans Day dinner for students and faculty and staff members. NYIT President Hank Foley, Ph.D., delivered opening remarks, affirming that “NYIT has always been a welcoming place for veterans and we always will be.”
In addition to thanking student veterans in attendance, Foley acknowledged several alumni veterans, including former naval surgeon and “Hero M.D.” Richard Jadick (D.O. ’97); Kevin O’Connor (D.O. ’92), who also served as physician to Vice President Joe Biden in the White House; retired Major General Philip Volpe (D.O. ’83); and U.S. Marine Chad Robichaux (M.B.A. ’07).
And there are more ways for NYIT students and faculty and staff members to celebrate Veterans Day.
- November 6 – 10: Campus Life will host a table in the SAC to collect appreciation notes from the community that will then be displayed in the SAC Gallery.
- November 10 (the official federal holiday):
- The Student Veteran Association will host a free pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon in the Bear’s Den in Long Island and the Edward Guiliano Global Center in Manhattan.
- A moment of silence will be held at NYIT’s New York City and Long Island campuses at 11:11 a.m.
- November 11: Join students and staff members from the NYIT chapter of the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) at the NYC Veterans Day Parade. Contact Amanda Mora at pcma4nyit@gmail.com for more information.
- November 10 – December 4: Veterans will receive a complimentary meal voucher of $10 that can be used at any dining facility on the Long Island campus through March 2018. Veterans can pick up their complimentary meal voucher from the Campus Life office on the second floor of the SAC. Meal vouchers will also be distributed to veterans at select future events.
In 2017, NYIT was once again named a Best Colleges for Veterans by U.S. News & World Report and received a Gold Award as a Military Friendly School. The university participates in the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement and Troops to Teachers programs. In addition, each year, several recipients of military scholarships to NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine graduate and go on to practice medicine in the armed services.
