New York Tech Builds Partnership With Cyber Research Leader

New York Institute of Technology’s “doer/maker” culture, programs, and research activities foster invention, innovation, collaboration, and entrepreneurship, to help our students learn how to identify, address, and solve current and unforeseen challenges, as well as create opportunities that benefit humanity.

One way New York Tech brings this to life is by developing partnerships with industry leaders to create opportunities for students to engage across a wide range of technology-driven fields, including cybersecurity.

New York Tech launched a partnership with Cybersecurity Ventures, a world-leading researcher and publisher covering the global cyber economy, in early 2018. Now in its third year, the collaboration continues, based on common goals to help develop the region into a cyber-defense hub, as well as to drive awareness and education about career opportunities in STEM in general and for women and minorities in particular.

The partnership includes hosting the recording of video podcast interviews with tech leaders by Cybercrime Magazine, published by Cybersecurity Ventures, on New York Tech’s New York City campus. It created Women in Cybersecurity, an interview series to shed light on the underrepresentation of women in the cybersecurity field (less than 20 percent in 2019). The show has featured Debbie Wheeler, chief information security officer (CISO) at Delta Airlines; Shamla Naidoo, when she was the global CISO at IBM; Sylvia Acevedo, CEO of Girls Scouts of the USA, and Nada Marie Anid, Ph.D., vice president of Strategic Communications and External Affairs and author of The Internet of Women, among others.

Additionally, Anid, a member of Cybersecurity Ventures’ Board of Advisors, interviewed entrepreneur and philanthropist Craig Newmark for a discussion about helping women and veterans thrive in tech careers, among other things.

“Women make up 50 percent of the population and should be encouraged to pursue various areas of study, including computer science,” said Anid. “This partnership creates awareness about cybersecurity as an exciting career regardless of gender. By joining forces, we reach the widest network possible and amplify opportunities in this ever-growing field.”

Of course, New York Tech’s academic strengths in computer science and information technology, and its Master of Science in Cybersecurity (Information, Network, and Computer Security) taught by faculty experts who have been awarded research grants in biometrics, swarm intelligence, cryptography, authentication, privacy, and mobile security, make it an even more appealing partner for Cybersecurity Ventures. Additionally, New York Tech is home to an Empire State Development-funded Center for Cybersecurity and is designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education through the academic year 2021.
