Imaging a Planet's Innards Using its Natural Frequencies of Oscillation

May 11, 2021
12:30 PM – 2:00 PM

Can we "hear'' the inner structure of our planet from its natural oscillations? After a large earthquake, Earth continues to “wobble” freely at certain frequencies. In his talk, Vitaly Katsnelson, Ph.D., assistant professor of mathematics, will show how measuring these frequencies with a seismometer can allow one to determine large-scale physical features deep inside our planet without drilling. He’ll also discuss how this is directly related to NASA's Mars exploration program to determine the inner structure of Mars.

This presentation is part of the Spring 2021 Math & Physics Joint Seminar Series, which features exciting talks by our own faculty member on the topics of their research.
