Civic Thursdays: Hunger Banquet

November 8, 2018
12:45 PM – 2:00 PM

SAC (Student Activity Center), Bears Den
Long Island, NY

Students, staff, and faculty are invited to attend the Oxfam Hunger Banquet in observance of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. This is an interactive event that brings statistics about poverty to life. Guests randomly select tickets matching real persons who are high-, middle-, or low-income earners, demonstrating that where you end up is all in the luck of the draw. By dividing people into high, medium, and low classes, we create a more dramatic platform for beginning our conversation on the topics of poverty, hunger, and homelessness. Food is served to each group in accordance to their income group to further connect the simulation with the discussion. This event helps increase Oxfam's power and citizens' ability to respond to global crises, highlight issues of injustice, and change the laws that keep people trapped in poverty.
