All Recent Accomplishments

Milan Toma, Ph.D., assistant professor of mechanical engineering, presented a paper titled "Predicting Concussion Symptoms Using Computer Simulations," at the Future Technologies Conference (FTC) 2018, in Vancouver, BC, Canada, November 13-14, 2018. The associated paper is published in Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing, vol. 880, pages 557-568, Springer. Toma also chaired a session titled "Software Engineering" at the conference.

David Nadler, Ph.D., assistant professor and chair of the Department of Environmental Technology and Sustainability, presented "Translating Agency-Collected Data to Inform Policy" as a panelist at the New York City Town+Gown Construction Data Analytic Symposium, presented by the NYC Department of Design and Construction on November 9, 2018. Along with other panelists from the University of Chicago, Columbia University, and NYU, he spoke about the horizontal and vertical logistics city agencies face during the implementation of new local environmental laws.

Babak D. Beheshti, Ph.D., interim dean of College of Engineering and Computing Sciences, delivered an invited talk titled “A Survey of Lightweight Cryptographic Algorithms” at the IEEE Tencon Conference, October 28 - November 1, in Jeju, Korea.

David Nadler, Ph.D., assistant professor and chair of the Department of Environmental Technology and Sustainability, participated in a panel presentation at the New York City Town+Gown conference "Pushing the Recycling Envelope: Construction and Demolition Waste," sponsored by the NYC Department of Design and Construction on October 30, 2018. Speaking to a consortium of university and government agencies, his presentation, "Where's the Data?", addressed the challenges and opportunities of data management for construction and demolition waste tracking in the City of New York.

Robert N. Amundsen, Ph.D., associate professor and director of the Department of Energy Management, was inducted into the AEE Energy Managers Hall of Fame at the World Energy Engineering Congress, October 17-19, 2018, in Charlotte, NC. This is the highest honor bestowed by the Association of Energy Engineers, which recognizes “outstanding leaders in the energy industry who over their lifetimes have made significant contributions in the field of energy management.”

Milan Toma, Ph.D., assistant professor of mechanical engineering, was interviewed for an article, "Understanding Concussion and Protection," by Lissa Oliver, published in Trainer Magazine on October 16, 2018. Toma discusses his study on concussions and jockey helmet safety, conducted in partnership with Hallie Zwibel, D.O., assistant professor of family medicine.

Milan Toma, Ph.D., assistant professor of mechanical engineering, has been selected as a Scientist-in-Residence as part of the New York City Department of Education and The New York Academy of Sciences’ 2018-19 Scientist-in-Residence Program. The Scientist-in-Residence Program is an exciting initiative that matches scientists and STEM professionals with elementary, middle, or high school teachers and their respective classrooms to conduct authentic science investigation.

Milan Toma, Ph.D., assistant professor of mechanical engineering, had his research featured in article, "Biomechanical Engineer Hopes To Build A Better Jockey Helmet," by Natalie Voss, published in paulickreport.com, North America's leading independent Thoroughbred racing website, on September 28, 2018.

Sarah Meyland, M.S., J.D., associate professor of environmental technology and sustainability, was an invited witness at the Public Hearing held by the NYS Assembly Standing Committee on Environmental Conservation and the Long Island Sound Task Force on August 27, 2018 at the Manhasset Public Library. Meyland submitted written and oral testimony on water quality conditions in Long Island Sound, specifically addressing flaws in the state pollution discharge program, which applies surface water science to groundwater discharges despite their substantial differences.

Milan Toma, Ph.D., assistant professor of mechanical engineering, published an article, "Fluid–structure interaction analysis of cerebrospinal fluid with a comprehensive head model subject to a rapid acceleration and deceleration" in the Journal of Brain Injury, on July 30, 2018. Toma's paper discussed the use of fluid-structure interaction simulations to assess numerically the interaction between cerebrospinal fluid flow induced by trauma and brain.
