School Counseling

Message from the Chair

Welcome to School Counseling!
Change Your Life—Change Theirs!

We are excited about your interest in starting the journey to becoming a school counselor. School counselors focus on how students relate and interact with their school environment, helping to reduce the effects of environmental and institutional barriers that often impede student academic success. They are responsible for providing caring, professional counseling and guidance for students dealing with personal, academic, and social pressures, and for fostering educational equity by promoting a fair and inclusive school environment.

School counselors are assertive advocates, creating  opportunities for all students to pursue their dreams and aspirations. They also serve as leaders, as well as effective team members, working with teachers, administrators, and other school personnel to help each student succeed. Acting as a consultant, school counselors also empower families to act on behalf of their children, helping parents and guardians to identify their student’s needs and interests, and access available resources.

The mission of the NYIT school counseling program is to prepare culturally competent, ethical, and skilled school counseling professionals to meet the growing needs of students. Our competency-based program prepares professional school counselors to deliver comprehensive programs that promote success for all students in the areas of academic, career, and college readiness, and social-emotional development.

Through advocacy, collaboration, and teamwork, individual and group counseling, and the use of data and technology, school counselor candidates will be prepared to support, promote, and enhance student achievement as agents of change and leaders.
