Middle School Extension to Childhood Education Certification in English Credits:
EDPC 616 Human Growth, Development, and Learning for Middle Childhood and Adolescent Education 3
Prerequisite: Prerequisite: EDPC 603

Candidates study human growth and explore the relationship of cognitive, social and emotional development to student learning in the middle childhood and adolescence classroom. Candidates analyze and prescribe interventions to cases that reflect their knowledge of the developmental stages of the learner, learner motivation and learning strategies for diverse learners. Candidates investigate the impact of assessment, diversity and the integration of technology on student learning in the classroom. In addition, candidates reflect on the influences of family, school, society, historical, cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic factors on student learning. The candidates take an in depth look at research and applications of learning, motivational theories, contemporary influences, and infuses literacy and study skills in the area of learner development.

EDLA 620 Teaching English/Language Arts in the Middle School Using Technology I – Pedagogy 3
This course introduces pre-service English language arts teachers/or in-service Childhood Education teachers to the fundamentals of theory and practice for teaching English language arts in middle schools. The course is designed to prepare English/language arts teachers to understand, respect and effectively facilitate diverse learners in language development, reading, writing, communication, and literature. instructional strategies, technology resources, and assessments for the reluctant readers will be examined. Course work includes current issues and recent developments in curriculum and methodology in the teaching of middle school English language arts. Ten hours field observation and field experience are required and integrated into the course.

EDLA 621 Teaching English/Language Arts in the Middle School Using Technology II – Content 3
Prerequisite: Prerequisite: EDLA 620

This course deepens and extends the knowledge, skills, and dispositions gained in Teaching English in the Middle School Using Technology (I). The course is designed to prepare English/language arts teachers to understand, respect and effectively facilitate diverse learners in language development, reading, writing, communication. and literature. Specifically, it will prepare teachers' necessary knowledge and skills (listening, speaking, writing, reading, fundamentals of literature, and language and literature) to teach effectively in middle schools. Course work includes current issues and recent developments in curriculum and methodology in the teaching of middle school English language arts. Ten hours field observation and experience are required and integrated into the course.
