Remembering Herb Fox, Ph.D.

Herb Fox, Ph.D., former professor of mechanical engineering, passed away on January 1. He joined New York Tech in 1970 as professor and dean of Science and Technology.

From 1982 through 1989, Fox served as vice president of engineering. In 1989, he became senior vice president for academic affairs, playing a key role in elevating many technology programs at New York Tech into reputable ABET-accredited engineering disciplines. During his tenure as a faculty member, he worked to promote and expand research among faculty and students. In 1992, he returned to teaching, serving as a professor of mechanical engineering until he retired in 2012.

“Herb was a brilliant researcher and a great teacher,” said Heskia Hesiakoff, Eng.Sc.D., former dean of the College of Engineering and Computing Sciences (formerly School of Engineering and Computing Sciences) and professor. “We will miss him forever.”

Before coming to New York Tech, Fox was a professor at New York University from 1964 through 1970. Throughout his career, he was active in the American Institute of Aerospace and Aeronautics, serving as an associate fellow as well as on its board of directors.

Fox graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earned a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn.
