Oh Snap, NYIT Announces Snapchat Geofilter Winner

September 9, 2015

Electrical and computer engineering graduate student Nilay Shah from Gujarat, India, created the winning design for NYIT's first-ever Snapchat geofilter contest.

"I was inspired by NYIT's mascot, which has a powerful personality," said Shah. "I tried to convey a lighthearted, mischievous relationship between it and NYIT students."

Shah's interest in photography increased when he arrived in New York City. As a daily user of the Snapchat, he admits he is addicted to snapping selfies.

He's not the only one with a penchant for snapping photos and taking videos with the popular messaging app. Two dozen students competed in the contest. The winning design was submitted to Snapchat and is currently available in the areas surrounding NYIT's Old Westbury and Manhattan campuses. To add the geofilter to your snap, simply swipe right while in the vicinity of either NYIT campus.

Geofilters are location-based overlays that users can apply to their snaps. Artists, designers, and Snapchat enthusiasts around the world make geofilter artwork.

Going forward, Shah aspires to combine his creativity with his engineering knowledge. When he graduates in December, he plans to start a career designing electrical equipment.
