News Byte: NYITCOM Alumnus Completes Residency Caring for “First Americans”

Ying Tang (D.O. ’19), who was born in China and came to the United States at the age of 11, was honored recently for completing his three-year residency program in family medicine at the Chickasaw Nation Medical Center in Ada, Okla., and for serving as chief resident in his third year.

“It has been a privilege to serve the Chickasaw people, to serve First American people. It is an underserved population. I think physicians should be in areas where they are needed most,” Tang said in an article in Red Lake Nation News, which noted he began his residency in 2019, just prior to the onset of COVID-19.

“When I started, we had three days of orientation,” Tang said in the article. “We learned about the Chickasaw Nation and the history of the Chickasaw people. Elders are important to Chickasaw families. Family is important to First Americans. This is similar in Asian culture.”

In terms of his next chapter, Tang has accepted a Hospital Medicine Fellowship at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind.
