Mini-Grants Fund Big Research in Cyber and Internet of Things

August 31, 2017

In order to fulfill a $100,000 award from Northrop Grumman for “Training and Research Programs at NYIT’s Cybersecurity Research Center and StartUp NY Facility,” NYIT School of Engineering and Computing Sciences has just issued five mini-grants to seed faculty research in secure data networks, Internet of Things (IoT), and biometrics.

“We are very appreciative of Northrop Grumman’s ongoing support of our research endeavors in mobile and cybersecurity and the Internet of Things,” said Nada Anid, Ph.D., dean of the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences. “It allows faculty members to explore new topics and provide students with unequaled high impact practice (HIP) opportunities.”

The five projects, which received $17,500 each in seed funds for the period of September 1, 2017 – August 31, 2018, are:

  • “Scalable Name—Lookup Algorithms for Resilient Named Data Networking (NDN),” Principal investigator: N. Sertac Artan, Ph.D.
  • “Security of Internet of Things—A Student Research Project Initiative,” Principal investigator: Babak D. Beheshti, Ph.D.
  • “Security Analysis of Mobile Applications based on Text Mining and Analytics,” Principal investigator: Wenjia Li, Ph.D.; Co-principal investigator: Howei Cao, Ph.D.
  • “CrossSafe: Smartphone-based System to Enhance Pedestrian Safety at Crossings via Crowdsourced Beaconing,” Principal investigator: Anand Santhanakrishnan, Ph.D.; Co-principal investigators: Kiran Balagani, Ph.D. and Paolo Gasti, Ph.D.
  • “Evaluating Practical Considerations of Behavioral Biometrics for Mobile Devices,” Principal investigator: Jonathan Voris, Ph.D.

NYIT researchers will be on hand to showcase their projects at NYIT’s Annual Cybersecurity Conference on September 28 at NYIT Auditorium on Broadway. The day will also include a student poster session showcasing cybersecurity research and is preceded by a Cyber Hackathon on September 27, also sponsored by Northrop Grumman.
