Edward Guiliano Global Fellowship: More Transformational Than Ever

The Edward Guiliano Global Fellowship Program is underway for another cycle of transformational projects and trips. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, student proposals slowed and trips were canceled or minimized. This year, once again, the Office of Career Success and Experiential Education is ramping up efforts to encourage students to apply for a fellowship.

On October 20, the office hosted a Meet the Fellows virtual information session featuring three fellows: Anthony Song Lara (M.S. ’22), Fatemeh Mohamadi Asli (M.S. ’22), and Jenny Quizena, who talked about their experiences, assisted interested students with proposal ideas, and answered questions.

Song Lara and Mohamadi Asli traveled to Lima, Peru, for their project, Instructional Technology Literacy Program for Teachers in Low-Income Communities. They worked one-on-one with teachers in low-income communities to teach them how to use new technology-based educational tools in their classrooms. Since returning from their trip, Song Lara and Mohamadi Asli have continued to develop the program and keep in contact with the teachers. One result from their project includes a teacher who developed an educational video that won academic awards in Peru.

Since graduating, Mohamadi Asli works as an eLearning designer for the software company GeoComply in Vancouver. “The Edward Guiliano Global Fellowship was an excellent opportunity to learn so much about myself and my capabilities,” she said.

Song Lara works as a website and marketing coordinator for Safer Schools Together, whose goal is to end community violence by encouraging school districts and communities to create positive, safe, and caring learning environments. He also teaches Spanish and is working toward his certification in CSS and JavaScript programming languages.

Quizena, who is pursuing her master’s in energy management, spoke about her trip to the Carbon Capture Technology Expo in Houston, Texas, in June, which focused on the role carbon capture, utilization, and storage will play to achieve a net-zero carbon economy. She also had the opportunity to tour a carbon capture facility. Quizena is planning to reapply for a fellowship for phase two of her project, which is tied to her senior thesis, in which she will create informational materials for children to understand the importance and potential of carbon capture technology.

Applications for the Winter/Spring 2023 cycle are being accepted through November 8, 2022.
