Class of 2020 is Welcomed in Nanjing

October 20, 2016

NYIT welcomed 322 new students to its Nanjing campus at a freshman opening ceremony on October 12. Speakers included NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., and Yang Zhen, president of Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications (NUPT), which partnered with NYIT in 2007 to launch the Chinese campus.

“NYIT in China has become a great success story,” President Guiliano told the Class of 2020. “We were one of the first American undergraduate campuses in China. And NYIT was among the first American universities in China to provide dedicated alumni, career, and employer relations support.”

He urged students to get involved in many activities to broaden their global perspective before their senior year, when they cap their education by traveling to NYIT’s campuses in New York City and Long Island.

“Experiencing the world inside and outside the classroom and laboratories is an NYIT value,” President Guiliano said. “We create global citizens able to compete in the global digital economy. And just as you will travel outside of Nanjing to join us in New York, NYIT encourages all our students to travel and experience hands-on learning.”

In his welcome remarks, President Yang cited NYIT’s successful partnership with NUPT and its Nanjing campus, which “keeps exceeding what it has achieved and … has made proud achievements in producing talent during the past decade.”

He seconded President Giuliano’s request that students cultivate a global outlook. As beneficiaries of NYIT’s partnership with NUPT in Nanjing, Yang added, “It’s more urgent for you to be equipped with an international view and global consciousness, and to broaden your horizon through learning history, culture, art, and the customs of various countries.”

Senior Qiang Mengye and freshman Shi Sufeng also greeted the first-year students, sharing words of wisdom and encouragement about student life at NYIT-Nanjing. Choosing NYIT, said Shi, “offers us more chances to explore the unknown world.”

NYIT-Nanjing currently offers degree programs in electrical and computer engineering, computer science, communication arts, and business administration—the same accredited programs that students take at other NYIT campuses.
