Digital Art & Design, M.F.A. – Applicants Without a Portfolio

If you intend to apply to the M.F.A. programs but do not yet have a portfolio, you must develop one before applying. To help you develop art skills and a portfolio, the Digital Art and Design department recommends you complete the classes listed below. These courses are not required and their credits do not apply toward the graduate degree. Please understand that although these classes are useful for developing a portfolio, there is no guarantee that a student will be accepted upon completion of the coursework.

For Animation Applicants:

  • Drawing 1 ARTW 101 and/or Drawing 2 ARTW 151
  • 2D Design 1 ARTD 101
  • 3D Design 1 ARTD 102 and/or Sculpture 1 ARTS 201
  • Senior Thesis 1 ARTC 402
  • Introduction to Maya (permission from the Chair is required). This course assumes an understanding of computer graphics skills -- for example, an understanding of Photoshop, Illustrator and AfterEffects -- which are taught in Computer Graphics 1-4.

For Graphic Design Applicants:

  • Drawing 1 ARTW 101 and/or Drawing 2 ARTW 151
  • 2D Design 1 ARTD 101
  • Graphic Design 1 ARTG 201
  • Typography ARTG 302
  • Computer Graphics 1 ARTC 201 (and Computer Graphics 2 ARTC 251, if need be)

For Art and Technology Applicants:

  • Drawing 1 ARTW 101 and/or Drawing 2 ARTW 151
  • 2D Design 1 ARTD 101
  • 3D Design 1 ARTD 102 and/or Sculpture 1 ARTS 201
  • Painting 1 ARTP 201
