The third year design studios, Design III and IV, are seen as explorations in the realms of the public and the private. Design III focuses on the design of a public institution, a moderately complex building that examines the relation between architecture and our social, cultural and political structure: the public realm of a specific assigned site. This is also the first of a sequence of integrated studios that emphasize the comprehensive nature of architectural design. The studio builds on the issues studied in prior ones including analysis to synthesis, form, function, and construction, as well as site design. Also included are the analysis and use of precedent, the natural environment, technology, social and cultural concerns. This semester will also require increasing mastery of architectural drawing, both analog and digital, as well as physical modeling. Design III is structured with suggested phases of work accompanying research topics, understood as supports throughout the design process.
