Design Fundamentals II develops the themes of visual literacy and the anatomy of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional composition. The syllabus is comprised of three project sequences: Cut-Outs, Color Exercises, and the Cliff Dwelling. The Cut-Outs and Color Exercises are based in avant-garde art practices from the early to mid-20th century—specifically, the Cubism, invented by Picasso, Braque and Gris, Purism, developed by Ozenfant and the painter / architect Le Corbusier. The Color Exercises are based on the innovative work in perceptual psychology and modern art practices developed by Johannes Itten and Josef Albers at the Bauhaus.  The Cliff Dwelling offers an introduction to design with a complex, three-dimensional site and an architectural program. This project also requires consideration of passive environmental concerns, and development of both architectonic (spatial) and tectonic (constructive) strategies.
