As you prepare to come to America, we are here to help you with your application, I-20, and the steps you must take to get your visa.
Admission requirements vary by academic program and degree type.
To be considered for admission to New York Tech, you must have satisfactorily completed high school (secondary school) with at least a B average or a 3.00 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.00 scale. There are specific minimum academic or examination requirements for citizens of many individual nations. Find details on the requirements for your country.
International applicants are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores for admission for most programs. If transfer students have less than 24 credits, they are required to submit test scores for Nursing, B.S. International applicants must demonstrate English proficiency by submitting TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, or IB English results. Students applying through the test-optional admission process may still submit SAT or ACT scores as evidence of English proficiency only. Please review our test-optional policy.

How to Apply
Step 1: Complete an ApplicationMore
Complete the New York Tech Online Application. There is a $50 nonrefundable application fee.
Step 2: Submit Required Application MaterialsMore
New York Tech prefers electronic submission of documents. Please submit your documents electronically to ensure efficient processing. New York Tech participates in several electronic transcripts networks: National Student Clearinghouse, Parchment Exchange, Scoir, and eSCRIP-SAFE. If your prior institution does not participate with one of our networks, they may send an electronic official transcript directly to New York Tech at email@example.com. If you recently submitted supporting documents, please allow the Office of Admissions at least 2-4 weeks to process your materials.
- Copies of transcripts of all college coursework. (See below for details.)
- Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or Duolingo English Test scores).
- Two letters of recommendation.
- A 300 to 350 word essay describing your career goals in the major you applied for and how attending New York Tech would further those goals.
- If you have fewer than 24 credits of previous college work completed, submit your official high school transcript and your SAT (critical reading and math only) or ACT test scores. You have the option of submitting results from the previous or redesigned SAT.

- If you or your agent are submitting documents by email or fax, then they are not considered official. Your application for admission will be considered for admission when we receive copies of these documents but official documents must be received in order for you to register for classes.
Transcripts: Translation and EvaluationMore
All final, official transcripts must be received prior to the start of your first semester. Final, official documents must come directly from the university.
If you have attended college overseas, you need to have your educational credentials evaluated by a National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) member organization. See approved agencies listed below.
If your transcripts are in a language other than English, you must submit an official English translation through one of the following:
Possible transfer credit will be determined upon admission to New York Institute of Technology and receipt of the course-by-course evaluation.
Step 3: Demonstrate English ProficiencyMore
Applicants are required to submit the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), as administered by the Educational Testing Service, the Pearson PTE Academic Exam, the Duolingo English Test, IB English exam, or an examination deemed to be equivalent by the Office of Admissions. Submit your scores using the following codes:

- Pearson PTE scores must be submitted online.
- Duolingo English Test: Submitted online.
- IB English Exam: Submitted online.
English Requirements for Admission
- Full Admission: The following minimum scores required for full admission to graduate programs are:
- IELTS score: 6.0
- TOEFL (iBT) score: 79
- Pearson PTE score: 53
- Duolingo English Test score: 105
- IB English Literature A HL (Higher Level): 4
- IB English Language and Literature A HL (Higher Level): 4
- ESL Pathway Admission: Students who do not meet the full admission English proficiency requirements can be admitted to an ESL pathway program. The following scores are required to be admitted to a Graduate ESL pathway program:
- IELTS scores: below 6.0 (5.0-5.5)
- TOEFL (iBT) scores: 41-78
- Pearson PTE scores: 36-52
- Duolingo English Test score: 70
- Students with these lower scores will be required to take non-credit English as a Second Language (ESL Pathway) courses, and will have the option to pursue credit-bearing academic courses alongside the required ESL Pathway program. Students whose registration does not include the required English course(s) may be deregistered from other courses.
- Pathway admissions requirements are applicable to pathway eligible programs. Pathway program eligibility is program specific and determined by the individual academic departments.
- Conditional Admission (ELI): Applicants who submit IELTS scores below 5.0, TOEFL (iBT) scores below 41, Pearson PTE scores below 36, or Duolingo English Test scores below 70 may be offered conditional admission to the academic program if all other academic requirements are met. Students who are offered conditional admission may enroll in the ESL Pathway Program upon completing level 2. Completion of level 5 is required for full admission to the academic program.
English Proficiency Waivers: New York Tech requires that all international students must show English proficiency by providing TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or Duolingo test scores when they apply. This requirement is waived for students who live or were educated in one of the following countries: Anguilla, Antigua, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Canada (except Quebec/Montreal), Cayman Islands, Dominica, Ghana, Grenada, Greenland, Guyana, Jamaica, Liberia, New Zealand, Nigeria, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, South Africa, Tobago, Trinidad, Turks and Caicos Islands, United Kingdom, and US Virgin Islands.
Step 4: How to get an I-20More
You may be admitted to New York Tech before the Office of Admissions receives the below documents, but you need to submit each document in order to receive your acceptance package and your I-20, which is required for your visa appointment.
- Complete an Affidavit of Support
Submit an Affidavit of Support that is notarized (witnessed and signed by a notary who is licensed by the government to witness signatures on legal documents)
- Submit a Bank Statement for Financial Support
Submit a bank statement with bank seal from your or your sponsor's bank demonstrating financial support. Your bank statement(s) need to show the following amounts based on your academic status:
- Graduate applicants must submit a Financial Affidavit of Support based on the number of credits taken in first academic year: $45,800 for 18 credits, $54,630 for 24 credits, $63,450 for 30 credits.
- Undergraduate applicants must submit a Financial Affidavit of Support in the amount of $58,900 for the first academic year.
- English Language Institute applicants must submit a Financial Affidavit of Support in the amount of $30,550 for the first academic year.
- Pathway Program applicants must submit a Financial Affidavit of Support in the amount of $37,550 for the first academic year.
If you are already in the United States:
If you are currently studying at another United States institution, you must submit copies of I-20 forms previously issued and a SEVIS I-20 Transfer Form completed by the international student advisor at the school you now attend.
- If you are in the United States on a non-student visa, you must submit proof of the visa that you hold (A-1/A-2, B-1/B-2, M, etc.) if you are changing to an F-1 (student) visa. Find information on which visas allow full time study. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services requires that anyone who enters the United States on a B-1/B-2 (visitor) visa may not enroll or begin a course of study as a full-time student without first receiving a change of status to an F-1 visa or exiting the United States and applying for the F-1 visa from a home country. Depending on how long you have been away from New York Tech, different requirements apply for readmission.
International applicants who only completed a three year bachelor program are to be a candidate for the bridge program. The bridge program option requires the student to complete additional credits before she/he may begin the graduate program. The academic advisor will assist the student in determining the specific courses needed. These courses must be all undergraduate courses or a combination of undergraduate coursework along with graduate courses. Upon completion of these credits, with a minimum 3.0 grade point average, the bridge program condition will be met. Students are required to complete the bridge portion of the program before beginning the master’s program. The required bridge credits are in addition to the graduate program degree map credits.
If you feel your education is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree, you should submit an evaluation report from an evaluation agency.
