Acronyms and Their Meanings

Federal

  • SSA Social Security Administration (800.772.1213) - Provides monthly income to low-income people with disabilities and those who have established a work record and then become disabled. There are two SSA programs:
    • SSI Supplemental Security Income - For people who have permanent disabilities that affect their ability to have “substantial gainful employment” and who meet certain income and resource guidelines.
    • SSDI Social Security Disability Insurance - Monthly income for people who have worked a specified period of time and become disabled.

  • OPWDD Office for People with Developmental Disabilities
  • DDSO Developmental Disabilities Services Office - 14 community offices exist in New York state to serve people locally
  • LIDDSO Long Island Developmental Disabilities Services - Office. 415 A Oser Ave., Hauppauge, NY (631. 434.6000)
  • ACCES-VR  Adult Career and Continuing Education Services - Vocational Rehabilitation - Provides funding for local agencies to provide vocational services, job development, and job coaching. Also covers some tuition expenses for vocational training at educational institutions. 50 Clinton St. , Hempstead, NY (516.483.6510).

  • ACLD Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities - Extensive health-care services are available. Collaborates with VIP to offer services that, with OMRDD eligibility, include vocational assessments and training, job placement, job coaching, and residential services.
