Health and Safety Reminder

Mental health support: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has a three-digit dialing code (available nationwide) for quick access to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. If you or someone you know is experiencing emotional distress, a substance abuse crisis, or a suicidal crisis, you can receive 24/7, free and confidential help from a professional at one of Lifeline’s network of 200 centers by dialing 988.

Health screen and campus access: While health screens are not required to enter campus, you must show your New York Tech ID to security at 1855 Broadway in New York City. Campus access policies are located here.

Tech Safe: New York Tech has launched Tech Safe, a new security app customized for New York Tech. Used by colleges and universities around the country, Tech Safe provides a direct channel to Campus Security and enhances the university’s response to incidents and emergencies. Tech Safe’s features include “panic buttons” to alert Campus Security or 911, location tracing options to have your travel on-campus monitored by Campus Security or even by a friend or family member, chat and tip reporting, and an “I’m OK!” feature to let people know you’re okay in an emergency. Students are encouraged to download the app to their phone:

Upcoming Events and Initiatives

Spring 2024 Withdrawal Period: The last day to withdraw from a regular spring class is May 9 and, for Cycle D, May 16. You cannot withdraw during the final exam period. Be aware that there will be a W grade on your transcript that may affect your financial aid, immigration status, education cost, and delay your path to graduation. Summer and Fall 2024 Registration: Registration for Summer and Fall is now open for all students. Meet with your advisor before registering for classes. Your advisor will review your record and recommend courses to advance to graduation. Find your advisor in the Student Service Hub > My Academic Progress > Advisors or look up here. Build your class schedule in Schedule Planner and register for summer and fall 2024 today!

Academic Calendar Spring 2024: Classes meet on Wednesday, May 8, in lieu of March 6.

Attention Graduating Students:

• If you are graduating in May 2024, you may have the opportunity to wear honor or leadership cords.
  • If you have actively participated in 3 or more student leadership opportunities, you may receive a Student Leader cord to be worn during commencement activities. Please apply here by April 25, 2024.
  • Honor cords can be purchased by graduates who qualify. The silver braided honor cord, worn draped from the neck on the front of the gown, designates the wearer as Summa Cum Laude (institutional GPA of 3.95-4.00), Magna Cum Laude (institutional GPA of 3.75-3.949), and Cum Laude (institutional GPA of 3.50-3.749). Qualifying graduates may purchase a cord until May 10. Cords ship within 48 hours of placing an order.

Choose Your Refund Method: If New York Tech owes you money from overpayment on a bill, you have choices on how to receive your refund. Selecting a refund method now can ensure you'll receive any money owed to you in a timely manner.

Here's what you need to do to get started:

• Select “Choose My Refund Method.”

New Canvas Module: Students may self-enroll in a Canvas module for holistic student development. This provides campus resources for wellness, as well as self-paced learning and engagement for integrative self-care and self-awareness in support of student academic, personal, and professional success. This module, designed and developed in collaboration with New York Tech students, includes non-graded assignments, quizzes, and discussion boards.

New York Tech is now offering free weekday shuttle transportation between the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) Hicksville station and the Long Island campus. To board the shuttle, you will need to present a current and valid New York Tech ID. Seating is prioritized for students. Faculty and staff may ride if there are empty seats after all students have boarded.

The shuttle will run Monday – Friday, when classes are in session during the fall and spring semesters. View our shuttle schedule.

Please note the schedule may be affected by inclement weather and traffic incidents beyond our control. To provide quality service, we cannot honor requests for alternate stops along or beyond the shuttle route. Professional courtesy is expected toward the driver and fellow passengers at all times when waiting for or riding the shuttle.

Find and Reserve Study Spaces on Campus: To further support you during your academic journey, we have quiet study areas on campus. Please refer to updated maps of the Long Island and New York City campuses, which indicate areas of campus reserved for quiet study. The libraries on both New York campuses have study spaces available by reservation. Librarians are available by appointment to assist students with writing papers.

In addition, you may also reserve a study room in Anna Rubin Hall or the Field House on the Long Island campus. The Office of Career Success and Experiential Education on both New York campuses is also pleased to offer quiet space for study or interviews. Contact career@nyit.edu for more information.

These spaces are intended to serve as areas of quiet study, so we ask that students exhibit respectful behavior and clean up after themselves while occupying these spaces.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) Notice for Domestic Students: It’s time to file your 2024-2025 FAFSA! Be sure to include New York Tech federal school code 002782. We are aware that there have been challenges and delays completing the new FAFSA. The Department of Education will send you an email when your completed FAFSA has been processed. If you need to make corrections, you can make them after you receive the email that your FAFSA was processed. If you experience difficulties completing the FAFSA, contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1.800.4FEDAID. Please visit studentaid.gov for more information about the new FAFSA.

The 2023-2024 FAFSA® is still available! Apply now at studentaid.gov for the fall 2023, and spring 2024 semesters.

New York State residents are also encouraged to complete a NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) application at hesc.ny.gov using our state school code, 2120.

Secure Shredding Program: New York Tech launched a secure shredding initiative that offers secure document disposal for students, faculty, and staff. The bins have been placed in many of the buildings on the New York City and Long Island campuses. New York Tech’s library on the Long Island campus, located in Salten Hall, is open. The Architecture Library in Education Hall and the New York City library are open for you to study and access resources. Our librarians are available remotely to help you find online materials: Live chat or make an appointment for individual research assistance.   • Outdoor seating parklets in Midge Karr, the medical and academic quads, and the "Parklet at the Pond" feature WiFi access. Outdoor seating is also available at the SAC. Walkways and paths are open for recreational purposes.

Be aware of pedestrian traffic and egress signs at locations where renovations are being performed.

Campus Recreation:
We are happy to provide Campus Recreation opportunities such as CitiBike, group outings, pick-up games, and intramural sports at the Long Island campus!

Citi Bike Day Passes: Free Citi Bike day passes are available in New York City on a weekly basis to students. If you would like a free 24-hour pass, please email techrec@nyit.edu.

Long Island Intramurals: Register for Intramurals on IMLeagues. We want to know what intramural activities you would register for! Help us by filling out our Campus Recreation Interest Form.

If you are interested in joining a Running Club please register on IMLeagues.

Ultimate Frisbee Long Island: TUF Frisbee wants you on the team! Come out and throw with us on the Turf field outside SAC. For more information on how to get involved, email ultimatefrisbee@nyit.edu.

Tech Threads is open on both of the New York campuses! Tech Threads provides New York Tech students with free access to new and gently used professional clothing and accessories for interviews, career fairs, networking events, and the workplace, as well as other career-related experiences.

Students are welcome to drop in or make an appointment via Handshake until the end of the spring semester. Inventory may include suits, dresses, skirts, button-down shirts, dress pants, ties, belts, scarves, jewelry, and other accessories. Clothing and accessories are donated through the generosity of New York Tech community members and external supporters.

• First semester international students are eligible for on-campus student employment through Student Aid. Student Aid roles are fully-funded by New York Tech. These positions are open to all matriculated students regardless of their financial aid package or domestic/international status. All on campus employment opportunities are posted on Handshake.   • International Student Employment Fund (ISEF): The International Student Employment Fund (ISEF) is a program that intentionally sets aside a percentage of Student Aid funding to hire first and second-semester international students through on-campus employment opportunities, who would otherwise not be able to obtain employment, or career development experiences at NO COST to a hiring department! Twelve international students are selected each semester on both the New York City and Long Island campuses to receive an award of $1,200 to earn through an on-campus role.   • The Creative Impact Consultancy is primarily a video production team composed of students, faculty, and staff members. Consultants will gain valuable experience while developing technical camera skills as well as soft skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, team building, and more.
    
    Our mission is to work with New York Tech and external non-profit organizations to deliver high-quality videos. These videos will hopefully help these organizations promote themselves, communicate with their audience, and visually represent what they do. Because this is subjective in nature, needs and goals will vary for each organization and so will our jobs and workflows.
