Four third-year NYIT physician assistant studies students enjoyed the excitement, challenge, pride, and joy of the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 1. Under the leadership of Michael Stracher, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon at Brookdale Hospital (Brooklyn, N.Y.), the student-volunteers were on hand to help provide medical support. The premier event of the New York Road Runners, the race attracted individuals from around the globe, who ran before two million cheering spectators and 315 million worldwide television viewers. NYIT student Frank Vespi said: "This was a great opportunity to see how a large-scale sporting event was managed from a medical perspective." Lawrence Herman, assistant professor of physician assistant studies, is the moderator of a continuing medical education program webcast, "Understanding the Role of New Therapies in Treating Type 2 Diabetes," sponsored by the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

Frank Acevedo,, assistant professor of physician studies, lectured about acute lung injury and adult respiratory syndrome at the Surgical Grand Rounds at Winthrop University Hospital, Mineola, N.Y., July 8.

Lawrence Herman, assistant professor of physician assistant studies, presented, "Painful Diabetic Neuropathies: How Can We Gain on the Pain?" at the Florida Academy of Physician Assistants' Summer CME, Miami, July 29.

Frank Acevedo, assistant professor of physician assistant studies, presented, "SIRS, Sepsis, and Septic Shock" and "Antibacterial/ Antifungal Therapy in Critical Care," at the annual meeting of the Association of Physician Assistants in Cardiovascular Surgery, Atlanta, Ga., June 11-12.

Barbara Piccirillo and Frank A. Acevedo, assistant professors of physician assistant studies, presented three workshops on ultrasound applications in emergency medicine at a conference of the Society of Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants, San Marco, Fla., April 6-8.

Frank Acevedo, assistant professor of physician assistant studies, presented "Preoperative Evaluation of the Critical Care Patient" at Winthrop University Hospital's Physician Assistant Critical Care Residency, Feb. 26, Mineola, N.Y.

Barbara Piccirillo, assistant professor of physician assistant studies, presented a dual workshop, “Introduction into Cardiac Echo Ultrasound for Cardiovascular Physician Assistants,” at the 28th CME Annual Winter Educational Conference of the Association of Physician Assistants in Cardiovascular Surgery, San Francisco, Calif., Jan. 24.

Salvatore Barese, Ed.D., chair, and Frank Acevedo, assistant professor in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies, presented, "Why More is Not Necessarily Better: Retooling Your Curriculum to Fit Carnegie Contact Hour Guidelines," at the Physician Assistant Education Association's Annual Education Forum, Savannah, Ga., Oct. 31.

Salvatore Barese, Ed.D., associate professor and chairperson, Department of Physician Assistant Studies, has been recognized as a Distinguished Fellow by the American Academy of Physician Assistants. The award recognizes exemplary achievement in service to the profession, advancement of health care for all people, and dedication to the community.

Lawrence Herman, assistant professor of physician assistant studies, has been named an exemplary member of the profession by the American Academy of Physician Assistants' Leadership and Professional Development Council. Of the 75,000 physician assistants in the United States, only 23 have received this distinction to date.

Lawrence Herman, assistant professor in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies, has been selected by the Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institute to assist in the development of a training course in insulin pump therapies for 50,000 primary care providers worldwide over the next five years.
