Sponsored Programs and Research

Office of Sponsored Programs and Research (OSPAR)

“The difficult we do at once. The impossible takes a bit longer.” — Seabees motto

Mission

The mission of OSPAR is to assist faculty and administration in obtaining external funding for the advancement of scholarship and research, institutional development, and student services. Toward this end, OSPAR: 1) provides services and resources for identifying funding sources; 2) advises on and facilitates preparation of grant proposals; 3) collaborates with administration and faculty to promote interdisciplinary teams; and 4) works with sponsor agencies and NYIT post-award offices to manage grant funds.

Identifying Funding Sources

Finding the right funding source for your research or project is an ongoing project and can be both an art and a science. OSPAR can help you access a wide variety of resources for identifying federal, state, and local government and private funding sources. Information on major funding sources and programs can be found on the OSPAR web site and through e-mailings from OSPAR. Contact us to let us know your interest area and make sure you are on our mailing list. Through the OSPAR web site, you can register to receive targeted funding information via email from the Sponsored Programs Information Network (SPIN), National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, GrantsNet, The Foundation Center, and others. In addition, the SPIN database can be accessed on campus at any time to perform proactive searches, and can be customized to perform weekly searches based on your keywords and other criteria. Call 516.686.7737 to find out more about using SPIN.

Preparing Grant Proposals

Putting together a competitive grant proposal can be a daunting task. To make it easier, OSPAR provides help with:

  • Obtaining guidelines and application materials Interpreting sponsor guidelines and regulations
  • Responding to Requests for Applications (RFAs)
  • Talking to program officers/sponsors about the project
  • Drafting budgets and budget narratives
  • Editing proposal narratives Institutional information/sample narratives
  • Navigating NYIT internal approval processes

The key to accessing these services is to contact the OSPAR staff as soon as you have an idea for a proposal. Call us at x7737 or e-mail Dr. Andors at aandors@nyit.edu.

Facilitating Interdisciplinary Grant Proposal Teams

OSPAR works closely with the Office of Academic Affairs and the Deans to identify areas in which NYIT has strengths and to help faculty network with each other. Recent interdisciplinary projects include the Center for Computer Security, a collaboration between the School of Engineering and Technology and the School of Management, and an innovative curriculum development project on bioterrorism involving NYCOM and the School of Health Professions. The OSPAR also coordinates proposals for major institutional projects that involve multiple departments.

Post-award Grant Management

What do you do when you receive an award? Celebrate! Then contact the OSPAR so that we can help you with spending the money. OSPAR works closely with the Office of Financial Services to ensure that grant funds can be accessed readily and spent in accordance with the sponsor’s guidelines. Contracts, subawards, and award acceptance forms should be submitted to the OSPAR for review and signature.
