Undergraduate Transfer Students: NYIT permits individuals who have earned college credits at other institutions of higher education to transfer into one of NYIT’s undergraduate programs under certain conditions. The transfer applicant assumes the responsibility of having previous schools forward official, final transcripts of their courses and grades to NYIT. The transfer of undergraduate credits will be considered under the following rules.
- Transfer credit may be given for courses completed at institutions in the UAE that are either federal institutions or licensed by the Ministry of Higher Education as institutions of higher learning. Additionally, transfer credit may be given for courses completed in the US at a regionally accredited college or their domestic or international equivalents, or other appropriately qualified institution acceptable to the standards of NYIT.
- Transfer credit may be granted for equivalent coursework only, and only as appropriate to the curriculum to which the student has been accepted. Substitutions may be considered in the core curriculum when coursework is from the same discipline. No credit will be granted for courses that duplicate or repeat content of previously transferred course or course taken at NYIT. Coursework must be appropriate to NYIT curriculum.
- Transfer coursework that does not directly apply to a specific NYIT curricular requirement may be transferred as a general elective. However, no credit will be transferred in excess of degree requirements.
- Transfer credit is recorded as credit only and is not computed in the NYIT cumulative grade point average. The grades of transfer credit may be relevant when computing GPA for graduation honors.
- Only courses with earned grades of C or better are transferable.
- The total number of credits that may be transferred is limited to 50% of the number of credits in the degree sought. A minimum of 15 credits in the major must be taken at NYIT.
- Students transferring to the Interior Design program – in addition to meeting the admission requirements for freshmen in the program, students who apply for transfer to the program must submit a portfolio to the program’s academic advisor.
- Upon receipt of appropriate official transcripts and offer of acceptance to NYIT, prospective students will receive a preliminary evaluation of transfer credit. This evaluation will outline the total transfer credits they will receive, how they apply to the programs to which they have been accepted, and which courses must be taken to qualify for graduation.
English Language and Mathematics Placement Examinations: NYIT administers English Language and Mathematics examinations to all incoming undergraduate students for eligibility and placement in appropriate level courses. The English Language Institute Proficiency Test evaluates grammar, vocabulary, reading and comprehension, writing, and oral skills. Students who pass all four sections are not required to take additional English language instruction. Students whose scores are below passing will be assigned to one of four developmental levels of English language instruction. Students in levels one or two may not enroll in academic courses. Students who place in level three are permitted to take one academic course concurrent with the level three English instruction. Students who place in level four are permitted to take two academic courses concurrent with level four English instruction. Note: for full acceptance and matriculation students must achieve a minimum score of 500 on the TOEFL (see above). The Mathematics Placement Examination identifies students who need developmental mathematics prior to taking mathematics courses in the degree.
An exemption for the math placement test is also given to a transfer student who has a minimum grade of C in a college math course such as College Algebra or Finite Math. If you wish to place out of a more advanced level of mathematics, you will have to take an advanced math placement test at NYIT.
Pre-College-Level Remedial Courses: Pre-college-level remedial courses required as a result of placement test results, do not count toward degrees and grades earned in such courses do not count toward a student’s cumulative grade point average.
Readmission of Former Students: Former undergraduate students of NYIT who have not attended within the last five years are required to re-apply through the Office of Admissions. Once readmitted to the college, students must fulfill the curriculum requirements in effect at the time of readmission. Those who have not attended NYIT within five years, and who are within 30 credits of degree completion, may make a request to the dean to follow the curriculum in place at the time of initial admission. The dean’s approval shall be based on compliance with accreditation, accredited or registered degree offerings, among other factors.
Graduate Admission Requirements
Criteria for admission to NYIT's U.A.E. graduate programs are of two types: general requirements for all graduate programs and program specific requirements. Both must be me for admission to a program. Applicants are admitted to NYIT based on their educational preparedness and potential to be academically successful. NYIT exercises professional judgment in the review and comprehensive evaluation of each applicant’s academic record and materials submitted to support the application. Admission decisions are based solely on documentation that applicants meet the degree and program entrance criteria.
The NYIT Office of Admissions is responsible for admissions decisions and transfer credit evaluation. Application materials for candidates for programs at NYIT-UAE are accepted and initially reviewed by the admissions staff in the UAE. Final review of application materials is done at NYIT’s central Admissions Office in New York where admissions decisions are made.
To be admitted, all applicants to graduate programs must submit:
- A completed graduate admission application;
- A non-refundable application fee of $100 U.S. or A.E.D. 370;

Individuals who have completed the undergraduate application process and have been accepted may be given a status of “accepted, matriculated” or “accepted with conditions.” Conditions may include prerequisite study, academic probation or proof of English language proficiency. Applicants accepted with conditions must fulfill the conditions within one semester or its equivalent before full matriculation.
Applicants who have a GPA between 2.5 and 2.99 but have satisfied the other requirements may be allowed to register as a non-matriculated student for a probationary period of one quarter in which they are allowed to take a maximum of 6 graduate credits, and must achieve a minimum CGPA of 3.0 after taking these 9 credits before they are accepted as fully matriculated, provided they meet all other requirements.
Specific Admissions Requirements by Program
Programs do not, in general, require that the undergraduate major be in the specific field to which the applicant is seeking graduate admission. However, each program sets forth certain pre-requisite courses or subject areas. Applicants whose undergraduate major is different from their intended graduate program must satisfy all specific course pre-requisites. This may require them to complete undergraduate or graduate pre-requisite courses that do not satisfy degree requirements. These pre-requisites are listed in the catalog under each program. Pre-requisite courses carry pre-requisite credit only, and the credits earned may not be counted toward the number of graduate credits required for the degree.
In some cases, applicants may be required to submit translations, and school and course evaluation from a recognized independent authority (World Education Services) to ensure the comparability qualify of the undergraduate work.
Master of Business Administration Program, Master of Science in Human Resources Management: Admission to the Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) or Master of Science in Human Resource Management program is dependent on satisfactory academic achievement as an undergraduate represented by the required cumulative GPA and meeting the English language (oral and written) requirements.
Master of Arts in Communication Arts: Applicants’ academic capacity and motivation to perform successfully at the graduate level in these disciplines will initially be judged on the basis of their undergraduate GPA. Applicants with undergraduate GPAs of between 2.85 and 2.99 may be admitted to a status of accepted with conditions, with the opportunity to demonstrate their qualifications for full matriculation by achieving a graduate GPA of 3.0 or better in the first 6 credits they take. Students will not be permitted to continue in the program after the first quarter unless they have qualified for fully matriculated status. Occasionally, if additional information is needed to determine eligibility for the program, an applicant may be required to take and submit scores for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or submit other supporting materials.
Master of Science in Computer Science and Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering: Admission to these programs requires a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, engineering or a closely-related field, e.g. physics or mathematics, from an approved program.
Approved programs are bachelor’s degrees from an institution in the U.A.E. that is either a federal institution or licensed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research as an institution of higher learning or from a regionally accredited college or university.
Applicants whose undergraduate major is different from their intended graduate program must satisfy all specific course pre-requisites. This may require them to complete undergraduate courses or pre-requisite graduate courses that do not count toward satisfying degree requirements. Applicants to any of these programs who do not have a minimum 3.0 GPA but not less than 2.5 from an approved program, but appear to have the potential for success, may be accepted with conditions (see above) and will be required to take the Graduate Record Examination. Admission will be based upon consideration of test results, previous academic performance, related employment and an interview.
-----
Readmission of Former Students: Former students of NYIT who wish to return and/or resume study must apply for readmission. If a student’s last date of attendance was within the past five years, the student must complete and submit a readmission form through the Office of Admissions and Registration. If a student’s last date of attendance was more than five years ago, the student must complete and submit a new application for admission.
Change of Major: Students who desire to transfer from one NYIT graduate program to another must notify the program chair that they are leaving their initial program and they must be formally accepted by graduate admissions and by the chair of the program to which they want to transfer. Requests for transfer of credentials should be made to the Office of Admissions and Registration. If a student has a GPA of less than 3.0, or a classification status other than fully matriculated, the requested program must be approved by the dean.
Graduate Transfer Students: NYIT permits graduate students to transfer a limited number of graduate credits under certain conditions. Transfer credit may be given for courses completed at institutions in the UAE that are federal institutions or licensed by the Ministry of Higher Education as institutions of higher learning. Additionally, transfer credit may be given for courses completed in the US at regionally accredited colleges or universities, or their domestic or international equivalents, or other appropriately qualified institutions acceptable to the standards of NYIT. Transfer credit must be requested by the student during the first semester of graduate study at NYIT. Requests received after the first semester will not be considered.
- Transfer credit may be accepted up to a maximum of nine graduate semester hours for the MBA, Human Resource and Communication Arts programs, and to a maximum of six graduate semester hours for Computer Science; Electrical and Computer Engineering; and Information, Networks, and Computer Security.
- The courses to be transferred must be deemed appropriate to the major being pursued and must be the equivalent of those offered at NYIT. The courses to be transferred must have been completed within five years of the start of NYIT graduate study. Transfer credit is awarded only to degree-seeking students with NYIT matriculated status. No credit will be granted for courses that duplicate or repeat content of a previously transferred course or one taken at NYIT.
- Grades of B or better may be considered for transfer credit, though only if the credit was not applied toward another degree.
- Students are required to submit official transcripts, appropriate course descriptions, and transfer credit request form clearly indicating the courses to be considered for transfer credit.
- Students will be informed in writing of the decision on the courses they applied for transfer.
- Transfer credit is recorded as credit only and is not computed in the cumulative grade point average unless it becomes necessary in determining graduation honors.
Admission Without a U.S.-Equivalent Baccalaureate: International students who have completed only a three-year postsecondary program, which is the equivalent of three years of undergraduate study in the United States, or a four-year program which is not equivalent to an American bachelor’s degree, will not be considered for graduate admission.
English Language Requirements: Students who have TOEFL score of less than 550 but not less than 530 may be admitted conditionally. They are allowed to take up to 6 credits in the first quarter, and they must provide evidence of achieving a TOEFL score of 550 by the end of the first quarter of their study, otherwise they are dismissed.
Computer Requirements
All NYIT programs require the use of computers and Internet to complete course assignments and for research. Computer labs and open-use computers are available for students registered in a program of study. Each NYIT student will receive a systems account giving them access to the Internet and other user services such as NYIT Connect. It is important to note that each account owner and workstation user is solely responsible for the usage incurred through her/his account/workstation. Anyone who intentionally abuses accounts and privileges, degrades system performance, misappropriates computer resources or interferes in any way with the operation of the computer facilities is subject to cancellation of privileges and disciplinary action.
Students, other than those receiving approved accommodations for a disability, are prohibited from using electronic recording devices in the classroom without prior permission from the instructor.
