Several NYIT faculty members and a graduate student participated this week in the annual meeting of the global “Pathways to Cleaner Production in the Americas,” held this year in Lima, Peru. Representing NYIT's multidisciplinary team were Nada Marie Anid, Ph.D., dean, and Marta Panero, Ph.D., director of strategic partnerships, from the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences; Sarah McPherson, Ed.D., chair of the Instructional Technology Department in the School of Education; and Anakaren Olivo, a graduate research assistant from the School of Management.
“Pathways to Cleaner Production in the Americas” is a three-year higher education partnership started in 2012. It is supported by U.S. Higher Education for Development (HED), with funding from the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs. The initiative aims at promoting sustainable manufacturing and economic development and fostering a modern workforce to implement cleaner production practices through academic training, novel curricula, and better linkages between academic partners and industry.
Pathways partners include NYIT, Illinois Institute of Technology, and seven universities in Latin America, including the host of this event, Peru’s San Ignacio de Loyola University. Other partners are the Santo Domingo Technological Institute in the Dominican Republic; Costa Rica’s Technological Institute; the National Autonomous University of Honduras; the National Engineering University of Nicaragua; Rafael Landívar University in Guatemala; and José Simeón Cañas Central American University in El Salvador.
The partners are focusing on micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in all non-US Pathways countries. The World Environment Center and the National Cleaner Production Centers are working with students and enabling them to gain practical experience through internships and practicum courses.
Dean Anid and Dr. McPherson presented research findings about global research collaborations and student competencies in cleaner production, respectively.
