Research @ NYCOM

NYCOM has and continues to develop an active research program encompassing a wide range of areas including  basic science and clinical research, health policy and global health research, and educational research. Most members of the NYCOM faculty have active research programs.

Two areas of emphasis for basic science and clinical research are:

  • neuromusculoskeletal biology and disease

  • renal development, physiology, and disease.

The focus on neuromusculoskeletal disorders is tied closely to our mission as an osteopathic medical school. Our goal in this area is to validate the clinical efficacy of osteopathic manipulative medicine and to investigate the physiological mechanisms mediating the clinical effects of OMM. These research efforts are supported by both internal funding and external funding, including from NIH, NSF, and private organizations.

NYCOM/NYIT currently partcipates in and support two research Centers.

  • The Adele Smithers Parkinson’s Disease Treatment Center supports research activities ranging from studies developing treatments to improve Parkinson’s disease patient quality of life to studies examining the genetic basis for variability in disease progession and severity.

  • The NYIT Center for Gerontology and Geriatrics focusses on development of the medical home concept for the elderly and beyond.

The NYCOM Office of Research sponsors several institutional programs designed to develop and to foster both faculty and student research activities at NYCOM including the popular summer research experience for NYCOM students and the Research training provided to NYCOM acadmeic scholars.

The Office of Research supports many Shared Resources that support NYCOM research activities, including an animal facility that supports research using fish and small mammals, a histology core facility, and shared equipment, including a Leica SP5 confocal microscope.
