HCOP Objectives

Recruit economically and/or educationally disadvantaged students seeking entry into NYCOM and allied health professions

Work with students by providing counseling, mentoring and other support services needed to help students successfully complete their training

Provide preliminary education and health research training

Publicize financial aid and financial planning resources to both students and parents through information session and financial aid workshops.

Expose students to community based primary health care in underserved areas

Develop a larger and more competitive applicant pool through partnerships with institutions of higher education and public school districts throughout Long Island, New York and other regions

Develop a cultural competence curriculum in which students and faculty work to enhance:
- Awareness of one's own cultural worldview
- Attitude towards cultural difference
- Knowledge of different cultural practices and worldviews
- Cross-cultural skills
