HCOP Objectives

  • Recruit economically and/or educationally disadvantaged students seeking entry into NYCOM and allied health  professions
     
  • Work with students by providing counseling, mentoring and other support services needed to help students successfully complete their training
     
  • Provide preliminary education and health research training
     
  • Publicize financial aid and financial planning resources to both students and parents through information session and financial aid workshops.
     
  • Expose students to community based primary health care in underserved areas
     
  • Develop a larger and more competitive applicant pool through partnerships with institutions of higher education and public school districts throughout Long Island, New York and other regions
     
  • Develop a cultural competence curriculum in which students and faculty work to enhance:
    • Awareness of one's own cultural worldview
    • Attitude towards cultural difference
    • Knowledge of different cultural practices and worldviews
    • Cross-cultural skills
