Welcome to Gallery 61. If we ignore the history of art and design, we risk re-inventing mediocrity. It is the review of historical work that can help us design visionary solutions for the future. Gallery 61 showcases both historical and contemporary work as a way of honing design theories crucial to future technological solutions.
We engage the entire NYIT community by exhibiting work of students, faculty, staff, and alumni as well as well-known and emerging artists. The exhibitions include painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, video, film, and performances.
October 20, 2016 – January 26, 2017
This exhibition shows work by students of the School of Architecture and Design and the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences.
The projects featuring lamps incorporate architectural abstraction to explore themes of illumination. These constructions are an exploration of mathematics and automation. Each lamp addresses three requirements, structure, overlap and panel sequence, to express architectural ideas; they were inspired by nature, Japanese animation characters, pop singers, a blackberry, a prism, and more. The materials used are illustration board and plastic sheets cut by laser to form intricate patterns.
Also on display are several objects made by engineering and computing sciences students. These objects serve several purposes, including aiding individuals with motor-based neuron diseases, picking up and sorting trash, and assisting with search and rescue operations.
