NYIT Architecture Professors to Discuss Teaching Strategies
Old Westbury, N.Y., Sept. 5, 2006: Educators bring their own teaching techniques into colleges, and although styles will differ, each has the same goal – to engage their students. It is this notion that inspired the theme for Territories of Teaching, the first of three fall lectures sponsored by New York Institute of Technology’s (NYIT) School of Architecture and Design. The program will take place on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 6:30 p.m., at Harry Schure Hall on NYIT’s Old Westbury, N.Y., campus.
Moderated by NYIT professor of architecture Nader Vossoughian, Territories of Teaching will feature NYIT architecture professors Jonathan Friedman, Michael Schwarting, Michele Bertomen and Rodolfo Imas, who will discuss their teaching philosophies.
“Instructors have very different philosophies about whether architecture can be taught, how you can teach it, and what you can hope to accomplish through design,” explains Vossoughian. He asks the questions, “can we articulate in a larger theoretical or historical framework the ideas, discourses and concepts that have informed our respective views of what constitutes an effective pedagogical strategy? And, what are some of the merits and shortcomings to the various approaches to pedagogy in the past?”
Upcoming lectures:
Gisue Hariri and Mojgan Hariri of Hariri and Hariri - Architecture will discuss their recent interior design projects and their monograph, Hariri and Hariri Houses, recently published by Rizzoli. This event will take place Tuesday, Oct. 17, at NYIT’s Manhattan campus, 16 W. 61st St., 11th floor. The final lecture, Interior Dialogues, with designers Kitty Hawks, Wendy Evans Joseph, Calvin Tsao, Nancy Boszhardt and Margaret Newman, will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 7, at Steelcase Inc., 4 Columbus Circle, New York City. Judith DiMaio, dean of NYIT’s School of Architecture and Design, will moderate a panel discussion about architectural interiors.
