NYIT’s New York College of Osteopathic Medicine to Host 27th Annual Hooding Ceremony


Old Westbury, N.Y., May 8, 2007: New York College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM) of New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) will honor its Class of 2007 at its 27th annual hooding ceremony on Saturday, May 19, 2007 at 10 a.m., at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center, New York City. The same medical students will be conferred their doctoral degrees by NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., at the college’s 46th annual commencement on Sunday, May 20 at 9:30 a.m. at NYIT’s Old Westbury, N.Y., campus.

Student speaker and marshal Salvatore Vincent Labruzzo of Holbrook, N.Y., president of NYCOM’s class of 2007, will address the graduating class of 295 students—170 women and 125 men. Student marshal Alexander Finkelstein of Brooklyn, N.Y., will be honored with the Dean’s Achievement Award for overall academic excellence.

NYCOM will award degrees to 36 graduates from the Émigré Physicians Program, which provides an opportunity for internationally trained physicians to re-train as Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), and to 15 graduates from the Academic Fellowship Program. Twenty-seven graduates will receive dual degrees, including Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts/D.O., a seven-year program (16 graduates); Master of Business Administration/D.O. (10 graduates); and Master of Science in clinical nutrition/D.O. (1 graduate).

Joan Y. Reede, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., will be the keynote speaker and will receive an honorary degree (Doctor of Science) at the NYIT commencement the following day. Reede was appointed Harvard Medical School’s (HMS) first dean for diversity and community partnership in January 2002. In addition, she holds the positions of associate professor of medicine at HMS, associate professor of society, human development, and health at the Harvard School of Public Health, and assistant in health policy at Massachusetts General Hospital. Reede also serves on the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Service’s Advisory Committee to the director of the National Institutes of Health and on the board of directors of the Massachusetts Technology Park Corporation.
