NYIT Student Athletes Continue to Give Back to Local Communities
Old Westbury, N.Y., Jan. 5, 2007: New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) student athletes continue to give back to local communities by participating in volunteer projects.
Members of the NYIT men’s lacrosse team visited Old Westbury Gardens in Old Westbury, N.Y., to assist the garden’s staff with their annual fall clean-up. The team raked leaves, removed overgrown vines and weeds and landscaped an open area. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Old Westbury Gardens features 160 acres of formal gardens, landscaped grounds, woodlands, ponds and lakes.
“We look forward to participating in our community service events each year,” says head lacrosse coach Jack Kaley. “The student athletes know their efforts extend far beyond the physical labor and you can see that in the effort they put forth while participating.”
Coaches and members of the NYIT men’s soccer team spent an afternoon at Bailey Arboretum in Lattingtown, N.Y., to help the grounds crew prepare the park for the spring season. The team planted flower bulbs and removed overgrown shrubs and vines. Open year-round, Bailey Arboretum features 43 acres of woods, ponds and gardens.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for our student athletes,” says head soccer coach Carlos Delcid. “It really helps them understand what it means to give back to the local community and it provides quality time for the team to bond off of the field and outside of the classroom.”
