More Than 400 Join In NYIT’s “50 Hours For 50 Years” Volunteer Program
Old Westbury, N.Y., Jan. 11, 2006: More than 400 New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) students, faculty, staff and alumni have rolled up their sleeves and volunteered their time and energy to collect coats and toys, paint classrooms, cook meals, plant flowers, and spend quality time with children who may not have been able to make it home for the holidays.
As part of NYIT’s year-long 50th Anniversary celebration, these good samaritans are giving back to local communities by participating in a “50 Hours for 50 Years” volunteer program. To date, NYIT teams have joined together to work with and assist 15 nonprofit and charitable organizations on Long Island and Manhattan, including Toys for Tots, New York Cares, Ronald McDonald House, Girl Scouts of the USA, Hartley House and the Family and Children’s Association. The volunteer program runs through the end of the academic year.
Highlights of their community outreach projects include:
Throughout NYIT’s campuses, students, faculty and staff members are sharing the joys of the holiday season by collecting new, unwrapped toys for needy children as part of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. All of the collected toys were picked up by the U.S. Marines during the NYIT men's basketball home game on Dec. 7.
NYIT’s Office of Residential Programs in Manhattan is teaming up with New York Cares to collect, sort and deliver winter coats for men, women and children in an effort to help thousands of New Yorkers in need.
A group of NYIT students in Manhattan worked hard to create a brighter future for New York City school children by participating in “New York Cares Day.” The volunteers painted classrooms, hallways and murals, and helped to organize the supply room at P.S. 261 in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Members of NYIT’s women’s soccer team and coaching staff donated food and cooked dinner for guests of the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park, N.Y.
Members of NYIT’s men's lacrosse team got their hands dirty for a good cause when they visited the Bailey Arboretum in Lattingtown, N.Y. The student athletes cleaned the flower beds and performed various landscaping duties to help the park prepare for the winter season.
To kick off the “50 Hours for 50 Years” program, the college hosted Anniversary fairs in which community organizations shared their “wish-lists” with members of the NYIT family. “The success of the fairs are a testament to our desire to give back to the neighborhoods where we work, live and study,” says Harriet Arnone, Ph.D., vice president for planning and assessment and co-chair of the school’s 50th Anniversary Leadership Committee.
