Dr. Reem Abu-Sbaih Accepted as Fellow

Reem Abu-Sbaih, D.O. (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)), assistant professor of osteopathic manipulative medicine at NYCOM, has been accepted as a fellow in a new program to train mid-career osteopathic physicians as clinical researchers. She is one of only 14 fellows in the inaugural class at the Osteopathic Research Center in Fort Worth, Texas, and will attend weekend seminars through next December to complete training in clinical research.

Experimental Biology Poster Presentation

Molly Kelly (OMS-II) and Diana Teplitsky (OMS-II), in a collaboration with their mentor Dr. Eduard I. Dedkov (Assistant Professor of Biomedical Sciences), presented the research posters entitled “The neuropeptide Y (NPY)-Y receptor and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)-VPAC receptor signaling systems are present within the developing coronary vasculature of the avian embryonic heart” and “Neuropeptide Y receptor Y2 is involved in morphogenic modulation of VEGF-induced coronary vessel formation”, respectively, at the Experimental Biology 2011 meeting in Washington, DC (April 9th – April 13th). The meeting abstracts have been published in the FASEB Journal 2010; v. 25: 684.4 and 684.3.

Dedkov, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Biomedical Sciences, served as the Organizer and Chair of American Association of Anatomist Symposium entitled “Sex & Gender-Based Differences in the Cardiovascular System” that took place on April 10 during Experimental Biology 2011 meeting in Washington, DC (April 9 – April 13).

Neuroscience and Histology News

A publication written by members of the NYCOM Neuroscience and Histology department was accepted into the journal of Neuroscience. Silent information regulator 1 mediates hippocampal SIRT1 mediates hippocampal plasticity through presenilin 1. Neuroscience. 179:32-40. Torres G., Dileo J.N., Hallas B.H., Horowitz J.M., Leheste J.R. (2011). Also, Dr. Joerg Leheste participated as a judge in the LI Science Fair. Joerg Leheste, Ph.D. from the Department of Neuroscience and Histology, participated as judge in The Charles Duggan Long Island Science & Engineering Fair held at the Crest Hollow Country Club Woodbury, NY on March 22, 2011. The Long Island Science & Engineering Fair is an extremely successful event that attracts the participation of sixty-three public schools and six private schools involving 500 high school students competing for scholarships, tuition grants, internships and scientific field trip.

Assistant Professor Michael Terzella, D.O. was appointed sub-committee chair for recruitment for the American Academy of Osteopathy’s (AAO) membership committee during the AAO annual convocation in Colorado Springs, Colo., March 16-20. Assistant Professor Sheldon Yao, D.O., was appointed chairman of the American Academy of Osteopathy’s (AAO) membership committee during the AAO annual convocation in Colorado Springs, Colo., March 16-20.
