White Coat Ceremony
The White Coat Ceremony began in 1993 when The Arnold P. Gold Foundation sponsored the first ceremony at commencement exercises at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Arnold Gold had been a teacher and pediatric neurologist for more than forty years at Columbia and felt that the recitation of the Hippocratic Oath at graduation ceremonies, when students accept the obligations of the medical profession, came four years too late.
He felt that medical students needed to be bound by at least some of the same professional commitments that bind all doctors, such as medical confidentiality, working for the good of the patients, avoiding harming patients, and not exploiting their professional privileges, their first day of education and training. The event explicitly enrolls students into the profession, welcomes them, affirms their new status and emphasizes—at a highly impressionable stage of their careers—the importance of committing themselves to excellence, not only in the scientific and technical areas of medicine but also in its human and humanitarian aspects. This charge to medical students is what inspired the Gold Foundation to begin advocacy and sponsorship of White Coat Ceremonies at medical schools in the United States and overseas.
The 2015 White Coat Ceremony honoring the class of 2017 will be held on Wednesday, July 22 at Crest Hollow Country Club. Each year, the class is honored at the White Coat Ceremony as they embark on their clinical medical education. The students receive their official medical doctor white coats and they recite the Student Pledge of Commitment.
