Academic Advising is a critical component of the educational experience for all students. It encourages students to develop decision-making skills, to think critically about goals and objectives, and to assume responsibility for their actions and plans. NYIT offers a range of academic advising resources—including faculty advising, the Advising and Enrichment Center, online degree maps, and information found within the college catalogs—to assist students in making meaningful educational plans that are compatible with their career goals.
First-Year Academic Advisor. All incoming first-year students are assigned a first semester advisor upon admission to NYIT. First semester advisors assist students with advisement and on-line registration for their initial semester at NYIT. Students transition to a program advisor in their major for advisement in subsequent semesters.
This strategy emphasizes the importance of quality relationships between student and faculty and also teaches students about all the resources available to make their advising experience meaningful.
