On May 20, 2007, the world came to NYIT. Nearly 10,000 family and friends -- some of whom traveled more than 7,000 miles -- gathered to celebrate NYIT’s 46th annual commencement. With a Class of 2007 that boasts more than 4,000 graduates, including those who earned degrees at NYIT campuses in Asia, the Middle East, and online through Ellis College of NYIT, the school’s global alumni network has grown to more than 73,000 worldwide.

“Today, at a single commencement, we showcase and honor the breadth and depth of our student population and the individual talents and strengths that make up our schools and programs,” said Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., president of NYIT. “I must share with you how exceedingly proud we are of this academic and cultural diversity.”

The ceremony began with “The Star-Spangled Banner,” performed by graduate Karen Gibson (B.S. ’07) of Uniondale, N.Y., followed by student speakers Alvaro Corral (M.S. ’07), a native of Ecuador, and Komal Crasto (M.A. ’07), a native of India, who each shared their personal and educational experiences during their years at NYIT.

During his salute to the Class of 2007, President Guiliano discussed 21st-century technology and the need for sustainable energy sources. “Innovation is the key to resolving our need for energy,” he said. “We will need to create efficiencies, not mandate conservation. In particular, we must mainstream renewable energy, making it easier to use, cheaper to buy, and cleaner to produce. And we must create seamlessly low-impact ways to travel, work, and live.”

Honorary degrees were conferred upon John A. Catsimatidis, chairman and CEO of Red Apple Group (Doctor of Laws); Michael S. Puntillo, founder of Jobco Incorporated (Doctor of Humane Letters); and Joan Y. Reede, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., dean for diversity and community partnership and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School (Doctor of Science). Reede also delivered the keynote address to 295 medical students and received the Riland Medal for Public Service at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine of NYIT’s 27th annual hooding ceremony on May 19 at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center, in New York City.

Following the main commencement ceremony, graduates were recognized and many received outstanding achievement awards at their respective school commencements.
