Holler Architecture, run by Assistant Professor of Architecture Tobias Holler, is one of seven firms selected by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for its New Practices New York 2012 award recognizing innovative and emerging architecture firms in New York City. An exhibition featuring the winners is on display through Sept. 8 at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place, in Manhattan.
“Most of the exhibited projects were done since I started full time at NYIT, and the synergies between what I teach, what I research, and the projects that my practice undertakes have been very productive,” Holler says.
The award noted Holler’s Long Island Radically Rezoned (LIRR) project, a sustainable vision of a self-sufficient, waste-free “living island” for 3.1 million residents.
Holler will also travel to Nosara, Costa Rica, with NYIT architecture and engineering students this summer to help build a new recycling and education center, which they designed. Since April, the group has raised more than $20,000 toward the project on kickstarter.com.
