Current Position
Medical director and owner of MS Family Medicine Health Care PC, with locations in Queens and Garden City, N.Y.
Getting the Word Out
Reed is also the co-founder of the First Things First Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works with Long Island communities to educate families about healthy living and disease prevention. She helped launch the organization after realizing it wasn’t just doctors who needed to provide health education. “I was talking to a little boy and told him he needed to start exercising. He looked at me and said, ‘My mother doesn’t exercise, so why should I?’ If his parent is not being the model to follow, then I can talk all I want and it’s not going to do anything.”
Osteopathic vs. Allopathic
When deciding which medical school to attend, Reed made the choice to focus on the more holistic approach to medicine that is one of the hallmarks of osteopathic science. “Whether it’s not getting the proper food or maybe something is going on with your family, I wanted to looked past the disease to find the root causes of illness.”
Active Alumnae
Reed still keeps in contact with her alma mater and welcomes NYIT student-doctors who perform rotations in her office. Their responsibilities range from maintaining electronic records to seeing patients and using osteopathic manipulative medicine techniques to taking patient histories.
Future of Osteopathic Medicine
Like many of her colleagues, Reed believes that more needs to be done to educate the public about what a D.O. degree means as opposed to an M.D. “We need to make sure of who we are and what we stand for. That means more awareness of the osteopathic medical schools, in hospitals, and other areas.”
Advice to Medical Students
“Figure out your passion and focus. Don’t let anybody stop you from reaching your goals.”
