Joseph Gabriel (B.S. ’78), principal of Holbrook, N.Y.-based Joseph Gabriel Architects PC, served as lead designer of the East Islip Community Chamber of Commerce 9/11 Memorial. The NYIT grad volunteered for the project, which was dedicated on May 27, 2012 (Memorial Day). Gabriel witnessed firsthand the collapse of the Twin Towers while working at the New York Stock Exchange.
Much of the materials were donated, including a piece of steel from the original World Trade Center.
“The towers are made from black marble over a base of the rubble to show them rising again,” says Gabriel. “There’s lots of symbology in the design.”
