Current Position
Director of Interventional Urologic Oncology and Assistant Professor of Urology and Radiology at Hofstra University-North Shore Long Island Jewish (LIJ) School of Medicine and Health System in New Hyde Park, N.Y.
First in His Field
After graduating from NYIT’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, Rastinehad became the first D.O. accepted into North Shore-LIJ Hospital’s urology residency program and the first D.O. to serve as a fellow at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Cancer Institute, where he studied minimally invasive techniques to diagnose and treat prostate cancer. At the American Urologic Association’s 2011 national meeting in Washington D.C., he was the first D.O. plenary speaker.
Precision Research
As principal investigator for a new clinical trial at North Shore-LIJ, Rastinehad applies MRI/ultrasound fusion technology to prostate biopsies. The technique zeros in on specific areas of the prostrate using MRI scans and eliminates random prostate biopsies. Only three medical centers in the world are evaluating this new technology, and Rastinehad and his team are at the only center in the United States other than the NIH offering it to patients.
World Traveler
Though he devotes much of his free time to reading new studies and techniques, analyzing data, and writing medical research, Rastinehad finds time to surf and travel. “Last summer, I traveled around the world, heading east until I made it back home, stopping in 14 countries along the way.”
Definition of Success
“Success comes from within you and how you set your own expectations. It is finding a place in your life that you can be happy with yourself as a person.”
Best Part of the Day
“Being able to connect with patients and seeing the relief on their faces when they believe that I am there to help them get better.”
