Barry Dahl (M.B.A. ’05)

Current Position
Chief financial officer of Argonaut Gold Ltd., a Canadian gold company engaged in the exploration, development, and production of gold in Mexico and Guatemala. Barry is based in the company’s corporate offices in Reno, Nev. “In 2009, we purchased the El Castillo mine in Mexico and expect to increase production to about 47,000 ounces of gold this year.”

The Midas Myth
“Many people think when you have defined gold resources, it’s just a big money producer. Actually, education and strategic planning are necessary in order to be profitable in this industry, from the exploration stage to mine development and operation to environmental reclamation and closure.”

A Golden Opportunity
“I chose NYIT because of the flexibility of its online M.B.A. program. I often work long hours, which made it difficult to attend classes on a regular schedule. At NYIT, I was able to do my class work later in the evening and choose classes that would have a direct contribution to my work assignments.”

Favorite NYIT Memory
“Completing my last course. It felt great earning my M.B.A.” Shortly after graduating, Barry was appointed chief financial officer of a construction company building pipelines and compressor facilities for natural gas.

Definition of Success
“When you are making a positive difference in people’s lives or your company.”

Favorite Food
“Dessert. Okay, that’s a category.”

Last Book Read
Black Hawk Down by Mark Bowden. “Our soldiers truly make significant sacrifices on behalf of our country.”

Family Man
When he’s not managing his company’s gold properties, Barry spends most of his free time with his wife and four children. In addition, he also volunteers for the local cub scout troop and is always up for a game of chess.
