The banners were hung, the cake was cut, and NYIT’s 50th anniversary celebration was officially underway at the 2005 convocation ceremony on Sept. 1. For five decades, the college has steadfastly held to its mission of providing career-oriented, professional education, access to opportunity for all qualified students, and support for applications-oriented research.
“In this, NYIT’s 50th year, we praise the foresight of the school’s founding faculty and leaders, who saw the critical need for an educational institution that effectively

combined real-world education with an entrepreneurial spirit,” President Edward Guiliano said during his 2005 convocation speech.
While the college’s mission has remained the same, NYIT’s role has changed, as has its global presence. NYIT has been transformed from a single-building institution in Brooklyn, N.Y., to a multi-campus college with programs throughout the world. It has evolved from offering associate-level, technology-related programs to a multi-disciplinary institution with eight schools offering baccalaureate, graduate, doctoral and professional degrees.
“The college continues to refine its programs to fortify the value of an NYIT education for 50 more years to come,” continued Guiliano. “Since 2000, for example, the school has registered 60 new degree programs with the Department of Education of the State of New York. At the same time, NYIT has chosen to de-list programs that no longer serve its student populations well.
“NYIT’s willingness to adapt is one of the many great things that sets it apart from other colleges, including the schools of the Ivy League,” Guiliano continued. “The path NYIT has chosen enables it to evolve, and in doing so, helps to define the emerging paradigm for an outstanding 21st-century, real-world higher education.”
NYIT’s faculty helps make this evolution possible. As experienced professionals, these professors use current trends in the marketplace to demonstrate real-world situations, giving students the edge they need to succeed. Recognition of this is NYIT’s ranking as one of the top institutions of higher learning in the country by U.S. News & World Report since 1998.
Further, members of NYIT’s alumni, faculty and student body continue to receive local, national and global recognition for their work in the areas of science, technology, arts, design, communications and athletics.
