Students get a jump on their education

For many students, summer vacation means sleeping late, spending sunny days at the beach, and hanging out with friends. But for first-year NYIT students, it also means getting a head start on their education.

The Summer Jump Start Advantage allows new students to complete up to five credits before they begin fall classes.

“The program helped to prepare me for my first semester at NYIT by giving me the opportunity to become familiar with the college and its policies,” says freshman
Jon-Andrew Coniglio.

“I enrolled to get a head start in college,” says Sally Beshai, another freshman who completed the program. An additional benefit, she notes, is that it helps to make the college experience less daunting for a first-year student.

The Summer Jump Start Advantage is offered at NYIT’s Old Westbury and Manhattan campuses. The five-week program includes two courses: College Success Seminar and Introductory Psychology. It is open to all first-year NYIT students, except for those who have completed more than 12 credits at another academic institution, or students enrolled in the B.S./D.O. or culinary arts programs.

“The opportunity to earn five credits in five weeks gives first-year students a tremendous sense of confidence,” says Zennabelle Sewell, associate dean of students. “It’s the perfect way to begin the NYIT experience.”
