Passion for accounting is in the genes

Beth Witkiewicz’s (B.S. ’97) career decisions were easier than most. For her, it was never a question of what she would do. Beth’s mother and aunts are all accountants, and her grandmother and great grandmother were bookkeepers. It didn’t take long for those numbers to add up to a very simple outcome – Beth, too, was passionate about accounting.

After a year at another university, she enrolled at NYIT and quickly got involved in campus life. During her senior year, Beth was president of the Student Government Association and the Accounting Society. “It was a great time,” she recalls. “I worked with students from all different majors. The experience really helped build my confidence and made me a well-rounded person.”

After graduation, Beth took a position with a public accounting firm but came back to NYIT in 1998 when she learned that a junior accountant’s position had opened in the comptroller’s department. She is now senior accountant.

“I work with a great bunch of people,” she says. “We are like a family; everyone is so supportive of each other.”

Many of her co-workers also received their degrees at NYIT, including staff accountants Eileen Gillespie (B.S. ’79) and Stacey Johnsen (B.S. ’97), and Comptroller Dan McGovern (B.S. ’74). Accounting Manager Bill Kelly (M.B.A. ’81) received his master’s degree at NYIT as well.

Beth has noticed many changes at the Old Westbury campus since her graduation, including increased course selection, more advanced degrees and new buildings. “And I think with the new dorms near the Old Westbury campus, student life is going to increase tremendously,” she says.

Beth and her husband, Tom, have one daughter, Jessica. Any bets on what she’s going to do when she grows up?
