International student makes NYIT his home
When Spiros Dandouras (B.S. ’93, M.S. ’95) arrived from Greece in 1991, he looked for a college that would introduce him to America. NYIT did that and much more.
Classmates living with him in the Central Islip residence halls quickly became a second family. It didn’t matter that they were all studying different subjects. Spiros’ new friends helped him master business and communication skills while he helped them build elaborate architectural models and put the finishing touches on art projects. “We brainstormed every night,” he says, “all learning together and supporting one another.”
After completing his master’s degree in 1995, Spiros planned to return to Greece, but NYIT administrators had

other plans. They offered him a position in the Office of Graduate Admissions at the Old Westbury campus, and Spiros was only too happy to accept.
Since then, he has continued to prove his competence and learn new skills. Today, he is director of admissions at the Manhattan campus.
Of the many positive changes he has seen at the school, Spiros says it is the increased customer service that stands out most. “We’re still a growing institution,” he says, “and just like our students, we’ve learned a lot of lessons over the years. The need to provide great customer service is just one of them.”
Spiros and his wife, Nikki, are expecting their first child this December.
